Background of the Study
Hyperlipidemia, characterized by elevated levels of lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) in the blood, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as heart attacks, strokes, and atherosclerosis (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the prevalence of hyperlipidemia is rising, particularly in urban areas like Delta State, where changes in lifestyle, including poor diet and physical inactivity, are contributing factors (Oluwaseun et al., 2024). Managing hyperlipidemia is crucial to preventing cardiovascular diseases, and lifestyle modifications, particularly dietary changes, are fundamental components of treatment.
Dietary modifications, including reducing saturated fats, increasing fiber intake, and incorporating heart-healthy foods, have been shown to significantly improve lipid profiles and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (Adeyemo et al., 2023). Nurses, through patient education and counseling, play a vital role in guiding patients toward healthier eating habits. Nurse-led dietary interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, but the specific impact on lipid profile control among hyperlipidemia patients has not been extensively studied in Nigeria, particularly in Delta State. This study aims to explore the effect of nurse-led dietary modifications on controlling lipid profiles among hyperlipidemia patients in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Hyperlipidemia is a growing concern in Delta State, contributing to the increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases. While pharmacological treatments are commonly prescribed, lifestyle and dietary modifications are essential to the long-term management of hyperlipidemia. Despite the well-established benefits of dietary changes in controlling lipid profiles, there is limited research on the impact of nurse-led dietary modifications in Nigerian healthcare settings. The absence of focused dietary interventions by nurses in managing hyperlipidemia has created a gap in effective patient care. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the effect of nurse-led dietary modifications on lipid profile control in hyperlipidemia patients in Delta State.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on hyperlipidemia patients in Delta State and assess the effectiveness of nurse-led dietary modifications on lipid profile control. The study is limited to a specific region and may not be generalizable to other states in Nigeria. Potential limitations include challenges in patient adherence to dietary modifications and the variability of lipid measurements due to factors such as medication or comorbid conditions.
